More people begin remodeling projects in May than in any
other month. So, in recognition of this activity, May has been
designated as National Remodeling Month. The local members of
The Greater San Antonio Builders Association are joining the 130
chapters of the National Association of Homebuilders Remodelors
Council to celebrate and promote the remodeling industry. This
year’s focus is on consumer awareness and
education.
To start with the basics, here are answers to some of
the most frequently asked questions regarding the fundamental
decision-making issues:
How will the economic outlook affect my
decision to remodel?
While the economy is struggling, the outlook for the
remodeling industry is good. Many homeowners are making the
pragmatic decision to stay put and invest a little in fixing up
their homes. Your decision on whether or not to remodel really has
more to do with your personal objectives and financial
outlook.
Remodeling your home is a big investment but will
generally yield an even bigger payback. First of all, it will
improve your living environment and presumably, your quality of
life. The average American home is over 30 years old, and more than
80% are over 16 years old. An older home may need considerable
repairs, or just revamped with modern amenities.
Remodeling may be a component of good maintenance, providing an
opportunity to improve and upgrade as needed repairs are made.
It may also increase the value of your home, depending on your
community and the resale value of homes in your neighborhood.
If you are remodeling instead of moving, you could save thousands of
dollars.
Should I remodel or
move?
This decision depends on a number of variables
including your lifestyle, job location and future career plans,
schools and educational concerns, neighborhood trends,
selling/buying and closing costs, and the cost of moving.
Remodeling can accomplish your livability goals and improve your
resale value when the time is right to sell.
Where can I find a qualified
remodeler?
One of the easiest ways to start with the Greater San
Antonio Builders Association (696-3800). They will mail you a
directory of remodelor members and suppliers. Also, check with
co-workers, friends, and neighbors that have had similar work
done.
What should I ask for when calling a
remodelor to verify qualifications?
Ask for references (and follow up on them!), proof of
workers compensation and liability insurance, and
licensing.
